Artist Bengt Lindstrom's style and technique

Most of Bengt Lindstrom's work focuses on color. He tends towards total abstraction, which is not yet perfect abstraction. He relates himself to the painting of Nolde, Ensor or Munch.

The life of Bengt Lindstrom

Bengt Lindstrom (1925-2008), a Swedish artist, became a major figure in the art world of the 20th century. He studied painting at the Stockholm Academy, then at the Grünewald School of Painting, and finally with the painter Jorgensen in Copenhagen. He was influenced not only by them, but also by the research into color taking place in Europe.

Gradually, like Braque, Eugène Leroy and Mondrian, he began to work on shapes, colors and their meaning: in this way, he helped Nordic painting evolve. He sought to go ever further in the quest for abstraction, but made the opposite choice to his peers: at the start of his career, he painted with few colors, then added more, playing with contrasts as he went along.

He also works in public spaces and paints sculptures, where his style of primary colors and thick lines is still recognizable.

He lived in Paris for most of his career, although he travelled to America and Sweden. He died in Paris following a stroke, and his heirs continue to fight over his estate, especially as regards the moral rights to his work.

The legacy of Bengt Lindstrom

Lindstrom left his mark on Nordic painting. He produced not only oils on canvas, but also lithographs and other drawings. He gave a great deal of thought to the use of color in painting, which is reflected in his work. He constantly exploits the contrast between warm and cold colors, as well as the use of curved and thick lines.

Recognizing Bengt Lindstrom's signature

The artist's works are often signed. If he does, the signature appears at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background.
