Émile Deckers' career

Émile Deckers was an Orientalist painter born in Belgium in 1885.

He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège, then in Paris in Carolus Duran's studio.

His work, which respects academic standards and the representation of the body in painting, has won him numerous prizes, including the Grand Prix for Anatomy, the First Prize for Painting and the First Prize for Historical Composition.

During the First World War, he fought at the front, which greatly slowed down his production.
In 1921, Deckers moved to Algiers, where he painted Orientalist scenes. He is particularly famous for his portraits of Algerians, depicting three protagonists, women or men, dressed in local costumes.

He continued to exhibit in Belgium, but also in Algeria and the Belgian Congo, where he settled in the 1950s.

Émile Deckers' imprint on his period

Émile Deckers' work was widely appreciated during his lifetime and continues to be admired today. His paintings and drawings contributed to the Western craze for Orientalism in the 19th century, and he is considered one of the leading exponents of this artistic movement. Having produced mainly oils on canvas, his works are extremely popular at auction.
