Tiffany, the art of jewelry

This lamp rests on a bronze base adorned with water lilies, and its shade is composed of hundreds of colored glass elements assembled in the manner of a stained-glass window. It evokes the work of Tiffany, a famous American interior design house that was active in the first third of the 20th century.

If you've heard the name somewhere, it's probably because you know that diamonds are forever... In fact, Tiffany is an American jewelry and fine jewelry brand, emblematic of a luxurious lifestyle Made in U.S.A.

Behind this name lies another house, "Tiffany Studios", which specializes in interior furnishings. They were created at the end of the 19th century by Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the jewelry brand's founder.

Tiffany, manufacturers of decorative objects

At the age of 24, Louis Comfort Tiffany decided to change his career path, refusing to follow in his father's footsteps. Louis Comfort Tiffany's passion was glass. He began by working in glass factories before opening his own workshop. A relentless worker, he pondered the possibilities offered by the art of glass, innovating in his field, perfecting techniques and patenting his inventions. However, one stroke of genius ensured his lasting fame: introducing stained glass into domestic interiors. Society at the end of the 19th century was interested in the art of the Middle Ages, and had great admiration for the achievements of that period, particularly in the field of stained glass.

But Tiffany and a number of French master glassmakers have gone one step further, adapting this almost-forgotten technique. They modernized it according to the tastes of the day: farewell to biblical scenes, in favor of fauna and flora, so dear to the Art Nouveau style. The artist created large-scale decorations, real glass paintings, to be placed in houses (including the most famous of all: the White House...). He also had the idea of transposing stained glass onto small objects: he designed numerous lamps with colored glass shades depicting stylized trees and flowers.

Tiffany stained glass lamp

The example of a Tiffany-style lamp

This lamp has great decorative qualities and the originality of a beautiful gilded bronze base with water lily decoration, which shows that it is not a cheap copy. But it is far from matching Tiffany's creations. If the glass plates remind us of a flowering tree from afar, one of the artist's lamps is a work worthy of a goldsmith's son: the plants are depicted in the manner of a natural history book, so much so that the species can even be identified.

Our lamp is one of the many copies that have flooded the market since the 1970s. It merits a coquettish estimate of 200 to 400 euros, but is far from matching the multi-million euro records for original creations.
