Shiro Kumarata, his life, his work

Shiro Kumarata (1934-1991) was born in Tokyo. He studied architecture in Tokyo, then design at Kuwasawa.

In 1965, he opened his own studio, which he named Kuramata Design Office. Like Warren Platner, he is an interior designer and furniture decorator. He designed furniture for the Memphis group. Issey Miyake entrusted him with the decoration of boutiques in Paris, Tokyo and New York. He travels all over the world, renewing his inspiration. With a strong European clientele, he opened a workshop in Paris in 1988.

He created great works that were major innovations for his time, such as the all-glass chair or the white Miss chair, in which he inlaid rose petals, inspired by Vivien Leigh and Un tramway nommé désir, winner of the 1948 Pulitzer Prize.

He drew much of his inspiration from Mondrian, copying his motifs and colors on furniture, as Saint Laurent had done on dresses.

He strives for immateriality in his work, working extensively with glass and metal, which he renders very airy. Many of his works are limited editions, which is why they are so successful at auction.

Shiro Kuramata's imprint on American and world furniture

Shiro Kuramata has made a lasting impact on the world of furniture design, and brought many innovations to the field. He was one of the first to use glass as the sole constituent material of his furniture. His work can be seen all over the world in museums, but private collectors play the greatest role in preserving his work.
