Marcel Coard, value and rating of his creations

His story, his background

Marcel Coard was a great decorator of the 1930s.

He is famous for his work on the design of couturier Jacques Doucet's studio and for decorating the château of Paul Cocteau (brother of Jean Cocteau), near Tours. Born into a wealthy family, he studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris before opening his own decorating boutique. He creates unique pieces in rare and precious materials, inspired by African and Oceanic art and Cubism. He collaborates with renowned cabinetmakers such as Chanaux, Pelletier and Roumy to create complex works.

Marcel Coard adapts his creations to his customers' wishes, mixing styles in his projects. His style evolved over the years, incorporating wrought iron, marble and a "humanist" dimension into his work. The richness of his creations and his ability to adapt made him a highly sought-after artist in the 1930s, with furniture stamped with his name and a parrot profile, his trademark.
