The artist's works and style

Influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement, Sergio de Castro's style focused on gesture and movement, emphasizing spontaneity and raw expression.

Color played an essential role in Sergio de Castro's style. His palettes are bright and contrasting, creating bold, energetic compositions. The artist often applied his colors in thick, overlapping layers. This technique added depth and dimension to his works.

Over the course of his career, Sergio de Castro has explored several abstract styles, ranging from more gestural, expressive compositions to more structured, geometric works.

The life of Sergio de Castro

Sergio de Castro was born in Buenos Aires in 1922, to parents of Spanish origin from the noble house of Castro. He was raised in Switzerland, but later returned to Argentina.

He took classes with Joaquin Terres Garcia, who, like him, was a multi-talented intellectual: painting, writing, theology... Sergio de Castro took a keen interest in music and was Manuel de Falla's assistant for over a year. In 1949, the artist obtained a scholarship from the French government to continue his music studies. Two years later, however, he abandoned this discipline and devoted himself solely to painting. He won the Hallmark Prize in New York, and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1960 and the Argentine Pavilion in 1980.

The artist shines not only with his painting on canvas, but also with his stained glass creations in Caen, Hamburg, Argentina and Switzerland.

For a time, he was also professor of humanities at the University of Strasbourg.

The artist died in 2012, aged 90.

The artist's imprint on his period

Sergio de Castro is not well known to the French public, but he has nevertheless left an important legacy in the history of twentieth-century art. Today, his works are quoted on the art market; and many private collectors appreciate his work.
