The life of Roger Mathias

Roger Mathias (1884-1971) was a landscape painter who produced impressionist and abstract works.

He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux with artists such as André Lhote.

He studied the work of the Nabis painters, such as Édouard Vuillard, who exerted an influence on his work. He also met painter Émile Brunet, with whom his influences crossed. They both worked on landscapes of the Landes and Arcachon Basins.

During his career, it is assumed that he exhibited his work only in Bordeaux and the surrounding area, so he was only known locally for his work.

In the '30s, we find rather impressionistic productions that deviate little from reality and faithfully reproduce forms. In the '40s, contours became blurred and colors more vivid. Finally, in the '60s, his canvases become close to analytical cubism. The shades he uses are darker, resembling Picasso's Portrait of Ambroise Vollard.

Roger Mathias' imprint on his era

Roger Mathias did not make a lasting impression on his era, and was only known locally during his lifetime. However, the aesthetics of his works are highly appreciated at auction, and are sought after by some collectors.
