The life of Sonia Delaunay

Sonia Delaunay was born into a modest Jewish family in Ukraine on November 14, 1885. At an early age, she was entrusted to her uncle Henri Trek and moved to St. Petersburg. From an early age, she developed a passion for European museums, which she visited in the company of her adoptive father.

She studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1905. Her early works are strongly influenced by Fauvism.

After an unsuccessful first marriage, giving her French nationality and access to privileged Parisian circles, she met Robert Delaunay, whom she married in 1910.

Robert Delaunay was also a painter. Together, the couple foundedOrphism, a pictorial movement characterized by the use of bright colors and geometric shapes. Orphism is a kind of fusion between Futurism and Cubism, and was born of Sonia Delaunay's creation of a blanket for her son's bedroom.

In 1913, the artist collaborated with the poet Blaise Cendrars. They produced an exceptional work, a two-meter-long accordion book with a remarkable layout, for the poem La prose du Transsibérien et de la petite Jehanne de France. The artistic creation was a great success.

In the same year, Sonia Delaunay set up her own workshops. She developed her artistic principles in fashion and the applied arts. It was a veritable laboratory of abstraction, for her, the art of her time had to abolish the hierarchy between minor and major arts in order to renew itself. There is therefore no difference between her painting and her so-called decorative work.

After the death of her husband and the Second World War, Sonia Delaunay experienced a profound artistic renewal. During this period, she produced monumental works ranging from paintings to mosaics, carpets and tapestries.

In 1964, Sonia Delaunay was the first living artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre. She was also awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1975.

She died in Paris in 1979 at the age of 94, having bequeathed all her works to the Centre Pompidou.

The artist's works and style

Sonia Delaunay left behind an abundance of diverse artistic works, including printed fabrics, books, haute couture dresses and paintings.

The fabric motifs created by the artist are now a major source of inspiration for many painters of the younger generation.

Sonia Delaunay's style is characterized by a bold use of color and geometric forms. Fascinated by the relationship between shapes and colors, she explored how they could interact and create optical effects. In this way, the artist has developed a visual language based on abstract compositions, often made up of geometric shapes such as circles, triangles and squares, organized in a dynamic, rhythmic way.
