The life of Maurice Estève

Maurice Estève is a French artist born in 1904 in Culan, in the Cher department.

The son of a milliner and a shoemaker, he was raised by his grandparents and later moved to Paris, where he was fascinated by the paintings of Corot, Delacroix and many others. He remained in Culan during the First World War, where he began to paint. He took a great interest in Cézanne's paintings, and moved to Barcelona, where he ran a fabric workshop because his father did not want him to be a painter.

He returned to Paris, where he attended the Académie Colarossi and briefly became interested in Surrealism, before holding his first private exhibition in 1930. Before the Spanish Civil War, he experimented with linocuts.

He also produced some Expressionist works and exhibited in Stockholm on the advice of Georges Braque, alongsideHenri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger. At the Paris World's Fair, he works in collaboration with Robert and Sonia Delaunay.

In 1945, Estève accepts an exclusive contract with Galerie Louis Carré. In the 1950s, he produced many lithographs.

He retired to Culan, where he died in 2001.
