The life of Léopold Survage

Born in Moscow in 1879, Léopold Survage attended the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1908.

Influenced by Matisse, Survage took classes with the leading Fauvist and met his friend Archipenko. In 1912, he exhibited alongside the Cubists at the Salon des Indépendants. He held his first solo exhibition at Galerie Bongard, organized by Guillaume Apollinaire, in 1917.

Survage was influenced by the artistic currents of his time, notably Fauvism and Cubism. The artist developed a personal style, combining the abstract geometry of Cubism with vivid, expressive colors. His bold use of color earned him the distinction of being one of the first abstract artists of his time.

Throughout his career, Léopold Survage explored various forms of artistic expression, including painting, sculpture, engraving and experimental film-making. He was also involved in the creation of sets and costumes for Russian ballet.

Léopold Survage died in 1968, a few years after receiving French naturalization and the Légion d'Honneur.
