Rating and value of Printz lamps
Prinzt is a French cabinetmaker and decorator well known to lamp enthusiasts. If you own one, it may be worth more than you think. On the art market, Printz lamps can fetch very high prices under the auctioneer's hammer.
His lamps are particularly sought-after, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €2,500 to €208,190, a fairly substantial range, but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to Printz lamps.
In 2021, gilded bronze sconces lamps dating from 1928 sold for €208,190, whereas they were estimated at €16,600 to €25,000 by Sotheby's, so the high estimate was almost multiplied by 10.

Style and technology of Printz luminaires
Printz's work is part of the Art Deco movement. Eugène Printz also designed furniture, so the floor lamps he made were a continuation of the style he gave to his furniture. He uses wood, but adds details of gilded bronze (like Gabriel Viardot) and glass, especially in his lighting fixtures (like Raymond Subes).
The life of Eugène Printz
Eugène Printz (1879-1948), a French cabinetmaker and decorator, produced a number of sober, elegant lighting fixtures that are highly prized at auction.
He trained as a cabinetmaker in his father's workshop, where he made copies of furniture. As early as 1925, he managed to exhibit work at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which he produced in collaboration with Pierre Charreau.
He then exhibited at the Salon des Décorateurs, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne, where he made his work known and appreciated. At the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, he presented for the first time the desk designed for Maréchal Lyautey.
He then designed some of the offices for the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris.
During his lifetime, he was very well known, receiving commissions from the City of Paris, the Princess de la Tour d'Auvergne and various European and overseas clients.
His work is world-famous, especially the space-saving sconces, with an aesthetic designed to complement any interior.
The success of Eugène Printz luminaires
Eugène Printz luminaires are very popular because they are minimalist and elegant. They can fit into any interior, whatever the style of the room. Today, there is no Printz house or factory that perpetuates his work, as is the case with Daum lamps. Consequently, one of the only ways to acquire a Printz luminaire is via the auction market, where works by the artist are regularly offered for sale.
Recognizing the signature on a Printz work
Not all lamps produced by Eugène Printz are signed. What's more, as several artists worked and sometimes collaborated with him, the lamp may be signed with another name even though it was also produced by Printz. That's why it's important to have your pieces appraised.
