Viallat, acrylic and collage on fabric

The life of Claude Viallat

Born in 1936, Claude Viallat began his training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier and the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

He painted on canvas without a stretcher, breaking with traditional painting.

A founding member of the Supports/Surfaces group in 1969 with Bioulès, Claude Viallat explored abstract forms on industrial tarpaulins. The group was a short-lived movement. Challenging traditional pictorial means, he theorized his art. For him, the material itself is more important, and the subject takes a back seat.

Claude Viallat wants to desacralize the work, demystify painting and always return to the idea of work and the Marxist ideology to which he adheres.

The artist's works and style

A few realistic landscapes and figurative representations can be found in the artist's collection, but they are not very frequent. In most of his works, abstraction predominates, giving way to a dynamic interplay of color and form. Claude Viallat fragments not only through his artistic technique, but also through his use of space.

In some of his canvases, Viallat uses the "bean" leitmotif, with traces of sponge covering the canvas. He desacralizes paint, replacing it with sheets or waxed canvas, using standardized, industrial materials.

Claude Viallat's mark on his era

Considered one of the greatest colorists of the 20th century, Claude Viallat is influenced by Matisse and Picasso. He explores fragmentation and spatial distribution. His passion for bullfighting is reflected in his depictions of bullfights on everyday objects. He is also inspired by primitive African, New Zealand and Australian cultures, incorporating Indian artifact forms into his work.

His international reputation is marked by numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 1982 and his representation of France at the Venice Biennale in 1988.

Not all Claude Viallat's works are signed. They are often signed at the bottom of the drawing or painting.
