The artist was born in China in 1920. He was introduced to art at an early age by his father and grandfather, both of whom were enthusiasts of Chinese painting . From an early age, he received special instruction in calligraphy and classical Chinese poetry. At just 15, he entered theHangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied modern Western painting and its techniques, as well as traditional Chinese painting. After graduating at the age of 21, Chu Teh-Chun became an assistant professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing . His painting is strongly influenced by the French avant-gardes: Cézanne, Matisse and Derain. These influences led to an astonishing fusion oftraditional Chinese and Western art in his career. In 1955, the painter moved to Paris , settling in the Latin Quarter and reuniting with fellow painter Zao Wou-ki. His travels in Europe introduced him to a wide range of influences that were to shape his work: Goya, El Greco, Nicolas de Staël , among others.

From the mid-1960s until 1978, the painter freed himself from any gallery or contract, and held twenty-four exhibitions throughout Europe. His painting is abstract and contemplative, exploring monochromes and playing with light. He is renowned for his powerful chiaroscuro and nebulous universe. He became a French national in 1981. After an evolution marked by Western art, the painter returned to calligraphy and his Chinese roots. His last project was in his adopted country, France, where he produced 58 vases in collaboration with the Manufacture de Sèvres.
