Style and technique of artist Alessio Issuppov

Issupoff did not follow any particular trend, initially producing works for the Russian Soviet regime, then landscape scenes and portraits. He drew much of his inspiration from Western European landscapes, as well as from Italy, working on shades of light and the representation of light. Some Orientalist influences can also be seen at the end of his career.

Alessio Issupoff, a little-known but much-loved painter

Alexei Vladimirovich Isupov, known as Alessio Issupoff, a Russian-born artist, became a sought-after figure among collectors, as did Krachkowsky and Bessonov. His name was changed when he moved to Italy.

Born in 1889 in Vyatka, he came from a family of artists, his father making Russian Orthodox icons for the sculpture part. He learned to paint from his father's fellow artists, who produced the pictorial part of the icons. He trained by studying Russian art produced before him and in his time, as well as contemporary French art. Konstantin Korovin was his master of genre painting.

After completing his military service and avoiding the front line, he traveled to different regions of Russia to draw inspiration for the diverse landscapes of his native country. He also took up a position in monument and art conservation. For a time, he devoted himself to the production of Orthodox icons and became familiar with the techniques of oil on panel and tempera on wood. However, he did not earn a very good living and was forced to return to Moscow in 1921 to produce works for the Soviet regime. Following health problems, he left for Italy 5 years later to receive appropriate treatment. This marked a revival in his career and artistic output. He was appreciated by critics who said he "painted by heart", recreating a Russian atmosphere in his depiction of Italian landscapes.

He suffered severe depression at the end of his life, which considerably slowed down his production.

He died in Rome in 1957.

Issupoff's imprint on his period

Issupoff left his mark on his era in Russia, Italy and Europe, although the general public no longer remembers him today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors: his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
