Lurçat, Aubusson tapestry, detail

The life of Jean Lurçat

Jean Lurçat was born in the Vosges in 1892. His vocation for painting soon became apparent. After training in Jean Prouvé's workshop, Lurçat decided to move to Paris, where his career would be easier to build.

The first years in the capital were to prove extremely enriching for the young artist. In fact, at just 20, Jean Lurçat attended several major academies and numerous avant-garde artists' groups.

Jean Lurçat discovered tapestry in 1917. He quickly established himself as a major artist of modern tapestry. His creations were exhibited internationally, and he collaborated with the Manufacture des Gobelins.

Inspired by medieval tapestry-makers, Jean Lurçat reinvented the technique, using numbered cardboard, robust broad-stitch weaving and reduced palettes.

In addition to painting and tapestry, Jean Lurçat produced ceramics, engravings and a number of stage sets. He also joined the Resistance during the Second World War, writing articles for the underground press.

Throughout his career, Jean Lurçat collaborated with the great artists of his time, such as Raoul Dufy and André Derain. Lurçat died in 1966, leaving his famous tapestry series Le chant du Monde unfinished.

The artist's works and style

Jean Lurçat combined traditional techniques with a modern approach to create unique, captivating works. His highly recognizable style is characterized by vivid colors, flowing lines and abstract forms.

Inspired by nature, the artist's most popular motifs are flowers, birds and fish. He also depicts many landscapes and incorporates mythological and symbolic elements into his compositions.

Jean Lurçat was also known for his social and political works. A committed artist, he expressed his convictions through his tapestries, dealing with subjects such as war, social injustice and the struggle for freedom.
