Rating and value of Printz furniture

Prinzt is a French cabinetmaker and decorator well known to furniture enthusiasts. If you own one, it may be worth more than you think. On the art market, Printz furniture can fetch very high prices under the auctioneer's hammer.

His wooden furniture is particularly prized, and the price at which it sells on the art market ranges from €300 to €3,244,000, a fairly substantial range, but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to Printz furniture.

In 2022, an ebony marquetry low storage cabinet dating from 1937 sold for €3,244,000, whereas it was estimated at €858,700 to €1,431,180 by Sotheby's, so the high estimate was almost multiplied by 3.

Printz furniture style and technique

Printz's work is part of the Art Deco movement. Eugène Printz also designed floor lamps. He uses wood, but adds gilded bronze details (like Gabriel Viardot) and glass, especially in his lighting fixtures (like Raymond Subes). His furniture is characterized by ebony marquetry.

The life of Eugene Prtiz

Eugène Printz (1879-1948), a French cabinetmaker and decorator, produced a number of sober, elegant lighting fixtures that are highly prized at auction.

He trained as a cabinetmaker in his father's workshop, where he made copies of furniture. As early as 1925, he managed to exhibit work at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which he produced in collaboration with Pierre Charreau.

He then exhibited at the Salon des Décorateurs, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne, where he made his work known and appreciated. At the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, he presented for the first time the desk designed for Maréchal Lyautey.

He then designed some of the offices for the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris.

During his lifetime, he was very well known, receiving commissions from the City of Paris, the Princess de la Tour d'Auvergne and various European and overseas clients.

His work is world-famous, especially the space-saving sconces, with an aesthetic designed to complement any interior.

The success of Eugène Printz furniture

Eugène Printz luminaires are very popular because they are minimalist and elegant. They can be used in any interior, whatever the style of the room.

Today, his furniture is no longer sold. Consequently, one of the only ways to acquire Printz furniture is via the auction market, where works by the artist are regularly offered for sale.

Recognizing the signature on a Printz work

Not all works produced by Eugène Printz are signed. Copies may also exist, which is why it's important to have your pieces appraised.
