The artist's works and style

Throughout his career, Pierre Chareau's artistic output was prolific and varied. His flagship products were lighting fixtures, including wall lamps, pendant lights and table lamps, as well as furniture with a clean, uncluttered design, being one of the first to use glass and steel.

The life of Pierre Chareau

Pierre Chareau (1883 - 1950) was a leading designer of the early 20th century. He was born in Bordeaux, a city he soon left to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

From 1899, he worked for Waring & Gillow as a draughtsman, before opening his own architecture and design studio in 1919. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, where his talent and ingenuity came to the fore; he was one of the first to create sliding and pivoting furniture for everyday use. He was soon nominated as a sociétaire at the Salon d'Automne. In 1922, he took part in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.

He made a variety of furniture, but is best known for his lighting fixtures, including the Religieuse, depicting alabaster leaves.

In 1925, he opened a boutique in the heart of Paris, on rue du Cherche-Midi, to sell his work and that of other designers. He collaborated with Marcel l'Herbier and Jean Lurçat on certain pieces of furniture.

Doctor Dalsace was one of his most loyal customers, and he created the Maison de verre for him, conceived as a space in its own right forming a whole.

In 1940, Chareau left for the United States, having received a large commission from Robert Motherwell to completely decorate his house. At the end of his career, he built another villa in Spring Valley.

He died in East Hampton in 1950, aged 67.
