The life of Charlotte Perriand

Charlotte Perriand was born in Paris on October 24, 1903. She found her vocation in childhood. The idea of becoming an architect came to her while observing the rooms in a Paris hospital.

From 1920 to 1925, she studied at the Union centrale des arts décoratifs. Two years later, she became an interior designer and opened her own studio on Place Saint-Sulpice.

His interest in interior design led him to collaborate with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 20s and 30s, working on major projects such as the Villa Church, the Villa Savoye, the Salvation Army refuge and the Swiss Pavilion at the Cité Universitaire.

Charlotte Perriand also worked with Fernand Léger and Pierre Jeanneret on the theme of art brut, and concentrated on photographing objects found in nature.

Later, Charlotte Perriand specialized in prefabricated architecture for leisure. In 1940, she was appointed advisor on industrial art by the Japanese government. Charlotte moved to Tokyo for 6 years, where she learned about the beauty of the useful, the power of emptiness and the mastery of space. Fascinated by Japanese culture, she returned to France changed and inspired.

Back in his homeland, the Steph Simon gallery (145 Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris) markets some of his furniture made with Jean Prouvé, as well as furniture by Jean Prouvé himself. The "plot library", a piece of furniture that customers can put together themselves, is a great success.

In 1967, Charlotte Perriand was asked to design the new ski resort of Les Arcs. Her concept of collective housing finally took shape. Her intervention made spaces functional, and rooms were modular with simple, modern furnishings.

Charlotte Perriand died in 1999, a year after writing her memoirs.

The artist's works and style

Charlotte Perriand designed numerous pieces of furniture in wood (oak, mahogany and pine). The architect also used wicker, straw and steel.

Stools are generally three-legged. The chairs are distinguished by their wooden supports and straw seat and back.

Tables and furniture can be sleeker in design and more colorful, like wall-mounted bookcases made of wooden planks divided by colorful squares. Some furniture, like tables, can be extended.

The luminaires designed by Charlotte Perriand are mainly wall sconces, spotlights and desk lamps. The sconces are distinguished by their mosaic-like layout, in the form of colored squares or rectangles, reflecting the designer's aesthetic. The majority of pieces are made of steel or lacquered metal, although some are also designed in wood, plastic or even enamel.

His objects are mainly cubbyholes, storage racks and coat racks, in wood, but also in steel and plastic.

Other pieces of furniture that have marked the artist's career

The exhibition organized by the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2019, which was entirely devoted to him, re-discovered the artist and his works, particularly those mentioned above. The art foundation has a major presence on the French and foreign art markets, and the exhibition, which lasted half a year, boosted the artist's reputation. She is very popular with collectors and the general public, and very much in vogue on the art market.
