Designer's style and technique

Paul Dupré-Lafon was part of the Art Deco movement, which reached its peak at the beginning of the 20th century. His work enjoyed rapid and dazzling success, thanks to the elegant design of his furniture and his sense of aesthetics.

Paul Dupré-Lafon, decorator to millionaires

Paul Dupré-Lafon was born in Marseille in 1900. He came from a family of craftsmen and was educated at a Jesuit school, before beginning his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. He moved to Paris in 1923 to develop architecture and design projects.

His success was almost immediate, and he soon received prestigious commissions, including Hermès. A decorator as well as an architect, he directed construction projects for private mansions, the first of which he completed on Rue Rembrandt. His style is remarkably elegant, using curved lines, wood and lots of leather in his furniture.

He held many positions, and worked in several fields at the same time, whether architecture, design or interior decoration. His work was very popular with some of the biggest stars of the 20th century, the famous pianist and singer Elton John being one of his many clients. That's why he's sometimes nicknamed "the millionaires' decorator".

All these personalities, together with the attraction of haute couture houses for its furniture, have contributed to making it popular and sought-after by the general public.

The artist never wanted to exhibit his work, as the notoriety offered by his sponsors was more than enough.

Dupré-Lafon died in Deauville in 1971, leaving behind him a considerable reputation and legacy.
