Virginie Demont Breton's career   

Virginie Dumont Breton (1859 - 1935) was a French artist born in Pas de Calais.  

Daughter of Jules Breton and granddaughter of Félix de Vigne, she grew up in an artistic environment and was introduced to painting at an early age.

Early in her career, she married Adrien Demont, also a landscape painter. She also painted this type of canvas, but also worked on portraits and scenes of daily life.

In 1880, she exhibited her work at the Salon des Artistes Français, and soon afterwards won a gold medal at the Amsterdam World's Fair.

In 1883, she joined the Union des femmes peintres et sculpteurs (Union of Women Painters and Sculptors) - and became its president some time later, succeeding Hélène Bertaux.

Her work is marked by her main place of residence, the Bay of Wissant. That's why she depicts many scenes of fishermen, beaches and seascapes.
