Artist's style and technique

Schneider's output is highly varied, and goes beyond the lyrical abstraction for which he is famous.

Identified as lyrical abstraction, Schneider's works are characterized by a bold use of color, dynamic gestures, a strong focus on the representation of light and space, and the presence of spiritual references. The artist's work reflects a deep sensitivity and a quest for personal artistic expression.

The life of Gérard Schneider

Gérard Schneider (1896 - 1986) was a Swiss abstract painter.

From 1916, he studied with Paul Renouard at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, then at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Through his painting, he explored expressionist and realist currents, before finally adopting geometric abstraction, or informal abstraction. He worked with Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung, among others, and began exhibiting his work at the Galerie Louis Carré in the 1950s. He then signed an exclusive contract with dealer Samuel Kootz.

He seeks to express drama and movement in his work.

The artist dies in Paris at the age of 90.

Gérard Schneider's imprint on his era

Gérard Schneider is a pioneer of lyrical abstraction who left his mark on the art critics of his day, and his work is well documented. Although his paintings have long been sold in the United States, Swiss and French collectors are showing a renewed interest in his work and are seeking out his canvases. They play a major role in the preservation of his paintings.
