Rating and artist's value Ernest Guérin

The artist Ernest Guérin left behind a very singular body of work, often described as realist or Pre-Raphaelite. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. From then on, prices for his works rose under the auctioneer's hammer. His paintings are particularly prized, especially by French and English buyers. The price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €20 to €20,000, a substantial gap but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to Guérin's paintings. In 2000, a predominantly ochre oil on canvas, Le grand patron de Sainte-Anne de la Palude, sold for €15,240 against an estimate of €4,580 to €6,100.

Style and technique of the artist Ernest Pierre Guérin

Ernest Pierre Guérin drew his inspiration from everyday subjects: peasants, festivals, landscapes around Rennes (where he studied and worked). His work could be described as realist, but in theory he came closer to the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which aimed to imitate the great Italian masters in England in the mid-19th century, especially Raphael.

Ernest Pierre Guérin, his life and work

Ernest Pierre Guérin (1887-1952), a French artist, is a relatively unknown figure to the general public, but his work is remarkable. Born in Rennes, he trained with Félix Lafond and Jules Ronsin at the city's École des Beaux-Arts.

He began by experimenting with portraiture, then illumination and watercolor, while exhibiting at numerous salons.

He befriended Mathurin Méheut, and produced a few paintings with him.

He exhibited his work at the Salon des artistes français, and by the age of 26 was already exhibiting at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. During his lifetime, he was a recognized and appreciated artist who made a living from his talent.

He lives partly in Paris but mostly in his native Rennes, and opens galleries in Dinard and Quiberon to exhibit his work.

It was forgotten after the Liberation.

Guérin's imprint on his period

Guérin succeeds in making his work known. He drew his inspiration from the great Italian masters, and succeeded in making his work known until the Second World War. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes devoted two retrospectives to his work in 2000.
