The artist's works and style

An artist who worked mainly in Paris during the 20th century, Charles Lacoste is close to Impressionism. He painted mainly landscape scenes, with a particular focus on the sky and the representation of light.

He works little with prints, producing more drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Charles Lacoste

Charles Lacoste (1870-1959) was a French Impressionist painter.

Born in south-west France, he befriended Gabriel Frizeau in high school, who collected Odilon Redon's paintings. This sparked his interest in painting. Self-taught, he was advised by André Gide, Arthur Fontaine and Henri Duprac.

He shows a very melancholy nature, which has an influence on his works. He regularly visited London and the Salon des Cent.

Later, he was one of the founding members of the Salon d'Automne. He also exhibited in Moscow and Brussels.

He gradually moved away from Impressionism, preferring dream-like subjects.

He died in Paris at the age of 88.
