Jules Laurens left behind a body of work that was both realist and orientalist. From then on, prices for his works rose under the auctioneer's hammer. His paintings are highly prized, especially by Swiss and French buyers. The price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €30 to €55,000, a very substantial range, but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Laurens' works. In 2016, his oil on canvas Rumelian Fortress on the Bosphorus sold for €55,000, whereas it was estimated at between €6,000 and €7,800. His quotation is stable.

Jules Laurens was a realist painter who also produced orientalist works (characterized by inspiration from the Orient or the Far East, which for him was mainly Turkey and Persia), drawing much of his inspiration from Delacroix and Toulouse-Lautrec. He produced drawings, oils on canvas and a few prints.

The life of Jules Laurens    

Jules Joseph Auguste Laurens (1825 - 1901) was a 19th-century French painter.

Born in Vaucluse, he joined his brother, also a painter, in Montpellier in 1837. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, learning painting and drawing techniques in Alexandre Cabanel's studio. A few years later, he continued his training at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied in the studio of painter Paul Delaroche. He failed to win the Prix de Rome in 1845, and set off the following year on a trip to Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Initially sent to assist a scientific mission, he made the representation of the Orient the core of his painting, and became known as an Orientalist painter.

He produced portraits of peasants and workers, as well as landscape paintings, in the artistic vein of Corot and the Barbizon school.

He died in 1901, aged 75.
