Paul Landowski is a 20th-century artist who produced a number of sculptures as part of the Art Deco movement. His work is closely linked to representations of the body and ancient subjects. Technically, he was influenced by Louis Ernest Barrias and Jules Lefebvre.

Paul Landowski, his life and work

French artist Paul Landowski (1875-1961) became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Paris, he spent his childhood in Algeria with his parents. His parents died at an early age, prompting him to return to Paris to live with his brothers and sisters at his uncle's house.

After high school, he entered the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jules Lefebvre. Interested in medicine, he attended dissections at the University of Paris, which opened up an important field of expertise in his work as a sculptor. He then attended the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied in Barrias' studio. At the end of his training, he was awarded the Prix de Rome and spent four years at the Villa Médicis. He participated in the Salon des Artistes Français for the first time in 1903, and remained a regular exhibitor for over 30 years.
