Cote et valeur de l'artiste Christophe Gabriel Allegrain

French sculptor and ceramist Christophe Gabriel Allegrain has gradually faded from the art history books, even though in the 18th century he was the equal and counterpart of his brother-in-law and collaborator Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Allegrain's works sell for between €150 and €400,500. A bronze statue of Venus taking a bath sold for €5,202 in 2010.

Allegrain Christophe Gabriel bronze (detail)

Artist's style and technique

Allegrain sculpted his works with great delicacy and dexterity, despite the poor quality of the marble he was sometimes supplied with. He was slightly inspired by some Mannerist statues, notably the bronzes of Jean de Bologne, appropriating the sinuous lines of the silhouettes, the serpentine face, the relatively small breasts and the elaborate hairstyles. Despite the often mythological subject matter, the representation of the body is highly naturalistic, with no unjustified concealment of the folds on the stomach or hips.

A recent graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain settled in the Marais district in the early 18th century.

Its footprint

A member of the neoclassical and baroque movement, Allegrain was promoted to the position of premier sculpteur du Roi and took up a seat at the famous Académie. Within this prestigious institution, he held the positions of Dean and Rector. In 1759, he succeeded Lambert Sigisbert Adam at the Académie and was appointed Professor of Sculpture.
