Jean Raoux, oil on canvas

Jean Raoux's style and technique

Jean Raoux mainly painted religious scenes and history. He was therefore a member of the academic figurative movement. Like Ferdinand Roybet after him, he was deeply influenced by Caravaggio. He was also inspired by Mannerism in his treatment of the body. Raoux mainly produced oils on canvas.

The life of Jean Raoux

Jean Raoux (1677 - 1734), a French artist, has become a forgotten figure among 17th-century artists.

He was born in Montpellier, where he studied in Antoine Ranc's studio. He trained in oil-on-canvas techniques. He left for the Languedoc region, where he received religious commissions, before traveling between Paris and Italy. In 1704, he was awarded the Prix de Rome, and stayed in the Italian capital as the King's boarder for three years. He not only painted pictures, but also created frescoes in Padua and Venice. He meets Philippe de Vendôme, Grand Prior of the Order of Malta, who protects him. He returned to Paris, housed and supported by Philippe de Vendôme. In 1717, he was admitted to the Académie Royale as a history painter, the highest category in the theory of genres. However, he was equally talented in war scenes and portraits. He befriended Antoine Watteau, both of whom were in great demand on the French art market at the time. He also drew inspiration from Dutch art, which he knew well.

He knew Voltaire, who called his art "unequalled", adding that he had equaled Rembrandt in success.

He worked extensively on chiaroscuro techniques (cf. Caravaggio) and on the draping of outfits and curtains (cf. Leonardo).

The legacy of Jean Raoux

Jean Raoux's work is characteristic of French and Italian academic painting. He is less famous today than in his day, but his works are still appreciated on the auction market. His work is characterized by its blend of French and Italian academicism.
