Artist Victor Gilbert's style and technique
V. G. Gilbert used the oil-painting technique mainly to depict genre scenes, otherwise retranscribing banal moments of everyday life. He also makes prints, but comparatively few, and photoengravings help to spread his work.
The life and work of Victor Gabriel Gilbert
Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847-1935), a French artist, became an important figure in the art world of the 20th century. He began painting with a decorative painter, then at the Ecole de la Ville de Paris. He established links with the Parisian artistic circle, but remained very much a self-taught painter. He won prizes at the Salon des artistes français, where his work was inspired by artists other than painters, as well as writers. Of modest origins, he was keen to depict the daily lives of the poorest people, in Paris and elsewhere in France. Peasants and merchants are therefore the main protagonists of his work. He also liked to depict children, especially newborns. His work is often forgotten among the representatives of the naturalist movement, yet it remains a major force on the art market today.
VG. Gilbert on his period
Victor Gilbert marked his period by his commitment, and was one of the first to venture into genre painting, making it his sole artistic production. Yet this category was neglected in his day, in favor of history painting, for example. He was therefore a pioneer in taking the side of the working class and the poorest, following in Delacroix's footsteps in the idea of giving representation to the most modest. He used many neutral tones, and thus mastered a particular technique for representing light in the painting. He is also gifted at transcribing the emotions of his characters, thanks to his technical level, which enables him to give just the right curves to bodies and faces. Reality is perfectly represented, as he wishes to bear witness to the lifestyle of the persona non grata in the great paintings of the century.
Recognizing Victor Gabriel Gilbert's signature
Victor Gabriel Gilbert's paintings are often signed and dated in the lower left-hand corner. He often signs "Victor Gilbert" in a dark tone.
