Style and technique of artist Jules Adler
Most of Jules Adler's work focuses on color nuances and realism. He wanted to represent nature and people as they are, without adding anything. He opposes the Romantic movement, which distorts human expression and reality.
The life of Jules Adler
French artist Jules Adler (1865 - 1952) became a major figure in the 19th century art world.
He began his training at the École des Arts Décoratifs (where he studied under Bouguereau), then at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian.
He exhibited for the first time at the 1888 Salon. He continued to exhibit extensively after this Salon.
His favorite subject was workers, and in his day he was known as the "painter of the humble". He won a gold medal at the Salon with a painting on the subject: Joies populaires. Like Jean Béraud, he took sides in the Dreyfus affair, but on the other side. His house became a meeting place for the Captain's supporters.
He was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne in 1903.
During the First World War, he set up an artists' aid center in Pigalle, distributing food and clothing. In 1914, he left to cover the Battle of Verdun as the French government's artistic representative.
In 1928, he was appointed professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he ended his career and trained his nephew in painting.
In 1944, he was arrested and escaped deportation, but died in poverty in 1952.
Jules Adler's legacy
Jules Adler, among all the painters of the 19th century, stands out for his naturalism and simple realism. He painted workers and soldiers on the front lines: persona non grata to whom he offered representation. He worked for equality and poverty for artists throughout his life, and contributed to the Dreyfus affair.
Recognizing Jules Adler's signature
In most cases, Adler signs his works on the canvas at the bottom of the painting in a color that contrasts with the background. Occasionally, Adler's works go unsigned.
