Victor Dupré, forgotten painter of the 19th century

Victor Léon Dupré (1811-1889) was a French painter who produced landscape paintings and belonged to the Fontainebleau School. He was born in Limoges, and trained as a painter by his brother, Jules Dupré.

In 1839, he presented his first works at the Salon. He exhibited there until 1878.

Victor Dupré produced landscape paintings inspired by Normandy, Berry, Limousin and the Île de France - notably the forest of Fontainebleau.

Jules and Victor Dupré moved first to Argenton-sur-Creuse, then to Fontainebleau, while working in his studio in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, rue de Rochechouart.

He died in Paris at the age of 63.

Victor Dupré's influence on his era

Victor Dupré succeeded in creating a unique style of painting that reflected the energy of his time, and made unrestrained use of contrasts of form and color, the keystone of his artistic style and the hallmark of the Fontainebleau school.

He was a marine painter of some renown during his lifetime, forgotten today but still of interest to collectors.
