Rating and artist value Gustave Jacquet

Considered a portraitist and painter of genre scenes in his own right in his day, Gustave Jacquet leaves behind an artistic identity of his own. This legacy consists mainly of drawings and paintings. Today, prices for his works are rising under the auctioneer's hammer, and his stock is stable. His canvases and other works are particularly prized, especially by French buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €20 to €255,570, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Jacquet's works. In 2017, an oil on canvas entitled La Bienvenue sold for €255,570.

Gustave Jacquet, forgotten portraitist

Gustave Jean Jaqcuet (1846-1909) was a French painter of genre scenes and female portraits.

Born in Paris, he studied with William Adolphe Bouguereau at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He devoted himself mainly to genre scenes, depicting scenes of daily life that were of no historical interest, but were nonetheless of some pictorial interest. With his great sensitivity, he was particularly interested in the representation of women - and depicted them in simple compositions, without extravagant jewels or clothes. Mannerist influences can be seen in his choice of colors and treatment of strokes (which are sometimes deliberately blurred to bring lightness to the final rendering, as well as transparency to fabrics).

He exhibited his work in various Parisian salons and acquired a small reputation.

He died in Paris at the age of 63.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Gustave Jacquet sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background.
