 Artist's style and technique

Guillaumin is representative of the Impressionist movement, remaining faithful to it throughout his career. He applied himself to enlivening and magnifying colors and lighting effects, restoring the vigorous energy of this resplendent nature.

The life of Armand Guillaumin

Armand Guillaumin was born in Paris in 1841.

He studied painting with his uncle, then with the sculptor Louis Denis Caillouette. In 1860, he joined the Orléans railroad company, but could not yet make a living from his artistic production. However, he became friends with Cézanne and Pisarro, with whom he exhibited at the Salon des refusés.

He painted with them and Van Gogh in Auvers sur Oise. He worked in etching, but his main production remained painting. His favorite subject was water, often depicting rivers or the sea.

At the end of his career, he used more colorful hues, moving closer to Fauvism. Othon Friesz admired and drew inspiration from this part of his career.

He died in Orly in 1927.

Armand Guillaumin's influence on his era

After more than thirty years of hard work, Guillaumin is a painter who today represents the Impressionist movement alongside other artists better known to the general public, such as Claude Monet. His works are now quoted on the auction market.
