A"revolutionary" artist

Lazare Bruandet was born in Paris in 1755. He studied painting with Jean-Philippe Sarrazin.

He had a strong temperament and very uncertain moods. He took an active part in the French Revolution right from the start.

At the turn of the 19th century, Bruandet played an active role in the emergence of a new landscape style outside institutional frameworks. Having been trained by the German master Rœser, he was influenced by the Nordic realist landscape tradition. Later, he adopted a practice of plein-air painting in the forests surrounding Paris, in the company of landscape artists Georges Michel and Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines. These experiences foreshadowed the emergence of artists active in Barbizon from 1822 onwards.

After killing his wife, whom he suspected of infidelity, Bruandet lived in hiding for several years in the ruins of a monastery in the forest of Fontainebleau. This was a prolific period for his art. The artist fled from a society he found decadent and at odds with both his personality and his art.

A few years after his exile, Bruandet remarried and was exhibited in numerous salons.
