Henri Edmond Cross, leader of the Pointillists

Henri Edmond Jospeh Delacroix (1856-1910) was born in Douai, northern France. He came from a modest family. His talent for drawing was discovered in childhood by a close relative. This distant relative was to become his mentor and help manage his career.

In Lille, he worked in the studios of Carolus Duran and Alphonse Colas.

In 1881, he exhibited his first paintings at the Salon and took the pseudonym Cross, in order to launch his artistic career without being compared to the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix.

His first works were naturalistic, but he soon became acquainted with the Neo-Impressionist painters and took part in their artistic experimentation.

He works and produces drawings and lithographs for Jean Grave. He continued to use these media afterwards, and some of his works were published by Ambroise Vollard. He befriended Maximilien Luce and Charles Angrand, as well as Paul Signac, who worked with him on division in painting. During his career, he also produced war paintings depicting the daily lives of soldiers and peasants in the early 20th century.

Henri Edmond Cross's influence on his period

Cross may have left less of an imprint on his period than some painters, but he remains a highly regarded artist, close to the Impressionists in certain respects, who produced remarkable work on light and colorimetry.

His works are very popular with French buyers, because they are often clear and allow for minimalist decoration.

Cross was to have a major influence on the Fauvists.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Henri Edmond Cross sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background, with the initials "HEC".
