Style and technique of artist Hippolyte Lazerges
For some of his paintings, Lazerges belongs to Orientalism, not a movement or current, but a term used to describe European paintings inspired by Oriental subjects. Inspired by Romanticism, he also produced portraits and religious paintings.
Hippolyte Lazerges, his life and work
French artist Hippolyte Lazerges (1817-1887) is a relatively unknown figure to the general public, but his work is remarkable. Born in France, he spent most of his childhood with his parents in Algeria - a major influence on his work, and the reason for the orientalist turn in his painting from the start of his career. Called up for military service, he returned to France, where he took the opportunity to study painting with François Bouchot and David d'Angers. His parents did not support him in his career, and he was initially quite poor, although he did carry out commissions for the State and for various churches and cathedrals. Later in his career, he returned to Algeria, where he devoted himself exclusively to the production of Orientalist paintings. He produced mainly portraits, but also genre scenes and landscape paintings. He was not only a painter, but also an essayist, publishing various treatises on art. He is also credited with a number of lesser-known musical compositions.
Lazerges' imprint on his period
Despite a difficult start to his career, Hyppolite Lazerges managed to make a name for himself. In the end, the religious genre suited him quite well, with his paintings combining a Caravaggesque treatment in the depiction of bodies and a Raphaelian treatment in the choice of colors. He demonstrates his versatility in his choice of subjects and his ability to depict very different scenes. Orientalism is interesting for him because it allows him to work with totally different colors. His religious paintings are more in cool tones, while his late-career paintings in Algeria are in much warmer tones: yellows, oranges, reds, in the image of Delacroix's production in Morocco.
