The life of Félix-Jospeh Barrias
French artist Félix Jospeh-Barrias (1822 - 1907) has become a forgotten figure among 20th-century artists.
His father, who shares his first and last names, was also a painter. He is the brother of sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias. He trained as a painter at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he took classes with Léon Cogniet. Like other artists, he exhibited at the Salon, but his paintings were not noticed. He became friends with the painter Hillemacher, with whom he tried several times for the Prix de Rome. He won in 1844 with the painting Cincinnatus Receiving the Ambassadors in the Senate. On his return from Rome, he exhibited again at the Salon and won several awards. Some of his works were bought by the Palais Garnier, and by the Church: two of his works are notably conserved at the Trinité in Paris.
His talent was recognized during his lifetime, and he opened his own workshop where he trained a rising star of the 20th century, Edgar Degas.
Most of his work focused on religious subjects, and he produced many decorative paintings and Stations of the Cross for various churches.
