Constantin Makovskij, a major figure of the Ambulants

Constantin Egorovitch Makovski, or Makovsky or Makovskij was a Russian painter born in Moscow in 1839, into a relatively well-off Russian family.

He trained as a painter at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, then at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. He then travelled to Egypt, particularly Cairo, and Paris, two cities that were to influence his painting.

He was a member of the Ambulants group, also known as Itinérants, which brought together Russian realist painters from 1863 onwards. The group was born in St. Petersburg as a reaction to the teachings and techniques advocated by the Academy.

On the whole, Makovskij depicts happy, cheerful subjects, corresponding to the idealized vision of life that Russian realists wished to convey in their works.

The painter died in Saint Petersburg in 1915.

Makovskij's imprint on his period

Constantin Makovskij left his mark on his era in Russia, France and Europe, although the general public doesn't remember much about him today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors: his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.

Recognizing Makovskij's signature

Constantin Makovskij's paintings are often signed at the bottom. He signs with his first and last name, often in a dark tone; sometimes with the town where he painted the picture, or the date.
