Style and technique of the artist Louise Adelaïde Desnos

Louise Adelaïde Desnos produced mainly oils on canvas, especially history and portraits, and followed the academic canons of the 19th century.

The career of Louise Adelaïde Desnos

Louise Adelaïde Desnos was a French artist born in 1807. She was born in Paris, and studied painting with Louis Hersent and Louise Hersent.

Following in Louise Hersent's footsteps, she took over the direction of the women's painting school set up in Paris's 6th arrondissement, to be succeeded by Auguste Gallimard, a position for which she is most famous in 19th-century art history.

Louise Desnos exhibited her paintings at the Salon from 1831 to 1853, and in this capacity produced many portraits, including that of French King Louis Philippe and copies of those of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.

She died in the Somme in 1878.

Louise Desnos' imprint on her period

Louise Adelaïde Desnos left her mark on nineteenth-century art, and is today a little-known but much sought-after artist, famous more for her contribution to the training of women painters in the nineteenth century than for her works per se.

His works are quite rare at auction, and could therefore fetch unprecedented sums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Louise Desnos does not necessarily sign her works. Copies may exist, which is why expertise remains important.
