Artist's style and technique

Alphonse Osbert's works are characterized by meticulous detail and careful use of color and light. In fact, Osbert's compositions are harmonious and realistic, incorporating allegorical elements marked by strong emotions. In principle, his idyllic landscapes feature contemplative figures standing out against a bluish background at dusk, often referred to as "Osbert blue". In a disguised pessimism and esoteric atmosphere, women play a key role in the Symbolist artist's work.

Alphonse Osbert's career

Alphonse Osbert (1857-1939) began an academic artistic career after studying at the Beaux-Arts in Paris under Henri Lehmann. During this period, he was inspired by painters such as Léon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon, as well as the Spanish masters.

Unlike the young artists of his time, Alphonse Osbert had no interest in the Salon des Indépendants founded by his friend Seurat. He even opposed it, exhibiting naturalist and post-Barbizon works at the Salon as early as 1880. Nevertheless, at the end of the 1880s, following a trip to Spain and various studies taken from life in the forest of Fontainebleau, Osbert's artistic style evolved and fundamentally changed his itinerary.

Alphonse Osbert was an active member of the post-impressionist Nabis group, and became close to Pierre Puvis de Chavanne. In the early 1890s, Alphonse Osbert developed an idealistic, decorative style that became his artistic identity.

Alphonse Osbert's imprint on his time

Osbert participated in the Salons de la Rose-Croix and was considered one of the leading Symbolist painters of his time. With his reputation firmly established, Osbert received a number of important public commissions, and created decorations such as that for the main hall of the Vichy spa. In 1934, he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur medal. The Musée d'Orsay holds 414 paintings by the artist.
