Artist's style and technique

Benjamin Netter's works are striking, thanks to their poetic, symbolic atmosphere, meticulous detail and meticulous use of color and light. In fact, Netter's compositions are harmonious and realistic, sometimes incorporating allegorical elements marked by strong emotions. In principle, his idyllic landscapes feature contemplative figures standing out against a bluish background at twilight. In a disguised pessimism and esoteric atmosphere, women play a key role in the work of this artist with its romantic overtones.

The life of Benjamin Netter

Benjamin Netter (1811-1889) began an academic career in art after attending the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Léon Cogniet. Born in Strasbourg, he spent most of his life in Paris.

He painted almost exclusively landscape scenes, drawing particular inspiration from mountain views. He traveled to Italy and Switzerland to find his panoramas. The artist worked extensively on the representation of light, and regularly exhibited his canvases at the Salon de peinture in Paris and at the Société des amis des Arts in Strasbourg. These diversified exhibition venues enable him to attract a variety of customers and make a living as a painter.

Benjamin Netter died at the age of 78 in Paris, where he had spent his entire career.

Benjamin Netter's imprint on his era

Benjamin Netter left his mark on his era with a substantial body of work that set him apart from other 19th-century artists. Some of his works are held in museums in France, but private collectors play the greatest role in preserving his work. American and German collectors particularly appreciate the artist's oils on canvas.
