Raoul Larche, his life and work
François Raoul Larche (1860-1912), a French sculptor, became an important figure in Art Nouveau sculpture in the 19th century.
He was born in Gironde, France, into a family of artists.
He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, then at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. There, he was trained by several artists, including Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Falguière. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1884, winning the second Prix de Rome for sculpture. At the same time, he won gold medals at various World Fairs.
Like Agathon Léonard, he was seduced by the iconography of the dancer, which he often reused, notably for his 1901 lamp, inspired by Loïe Fuller. These pieces were published by Siot-Decauville, a Paris foundry.
He dies after a car accident.

Some of Raoul Larche's works can be seen in various European cities, but relatively few: most of his work is in private collections. He leaves a legacy in the history of 19th-century art and sculpture.
