Cote et valeur de l'artiste Alexandre Léonard

The artist Alexandre Léonard leaves in his wake a very singular body of work, drawn from the animal repertoire. A talented sculptor, he produces many works that are particularly prized at auction. Prices for his works are now skyrocketing under auctioneers' gavels. They are particularly prized by French and European buyers. The price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €80 to €5,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Leonardo's works. In 2012, a chryselephantine sculpture of a meharist from the 1860s sold for €5,000, whereas its estimate was €3,500-4,500.

Style and technique of the artist Alexandre Léonard

Alexandre Léonard mastered the traditional sculptural techniques of bronze, gilded bronze and chryselephantine to produce a large number of animal bronzes, which make up the majority of his work. He was inspired by the work of Barye.

Alexandre Léonard, his life, his work

Lambert Alexandre Léonard (1821-1877), a French sculptor, became an important figure in 19th-century animal sculpture.

He began his training with Fourier, a steel engraver, where he learned to work with metal, particularly bronze, using chasing techniques.

Strongly influenced by the animal sculptor Antoine Louis Barye, he produced many animal bronzes, although some of his works took on a more personal inspiration, borrowing elements from Orientalism. His méhariste, produced in several copies (bronze and chryselephantine), is his most highly-prized work, yet bears little resemblance to the other sculptures in his output.

Alexandre Léonard's imprint on his period

Some of Alexandre Léonard's works can be seen in various European cities, but relatively few: most of his work is in private collections. His legacy to the history of 19th-century art and sculpture is considerable.
