Jean Chrysostome Stumpff, Transition-period cabinetmaker

Jean Chrysotshome Stumpff (1731-1806) was a Swabian-born cabinetmaker. He was originally from Schweigern, Germany.

He obtained his master's degree in 1766, and opened a store on rue Saint Nicolas, as a free or privileged cabinetmaker.

The cabinetmaker uses the techniques of rosewood veneer and Far Eastern lacquer. He produces trompe-l'œil marquetry using a system of lattices, often inspired by an antique repertoire.

He probably worked alongside Queen Marie-Antoinette's cabinetmaker, Ferdinand Schwerdfeger.
