History and development of the Winchester rifle

Winchester rifles owe their name to the company that manufactures them: the Winchester Repeating Arm Company. Walter Hunt patented his repeating rifle in 1848, selling the patent and improving it until Smith & Wesson took a stake in the operation. With Oliver Winchester, they created one of the first fixed metal cartridges. They went on to create the percussion metal cartridge. After Smith & Wesson's departure, Benjamin Henry developed the more powerful 44 cartridge. The weapon was used extensively during the American Civil War, making it a prized and sought-after collector's item. The first repeating rifle model is the 1866, which is also sought-after for its history, having been used by French soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War.

The Model 1873 followed, manufactured from 1873 to 1923, and is remembered as "the gun that won the West". Other models followed, but the older ones were the most sought-after at auction.

The success of Winchester rifles in collections

Winchester rifles are very popular at auction, as they are a sought-after collector's item. Production was very high, as this weapon was used for a long time and equipped many armies.

The more famous and esteemed the owner, the higher the gun's value. The most highly-rated rifles are the ceremonial ones, with the model 1866.
