Hosted by our auctioneer, the lecture on 18th-century tableware promises to be fascinating. The 18th century was a period of great artistic effervescence in Europe. Tableware was not immune to this wave of creativity, and underwent unprecedented developments. Table services were often works of art in themselves, with exquisite patterns, elaborate carvings and luxurious materials.
This lecture will give participants the opportunity to discover how tableware was used as a tool of prestige and social distinction. Eighteenth-century aristocrats sought to impress their guests with exceptional tableware, including dozens of pieces of silver, vermeil, or porcelain. Glasses and decanters were also key elements of the table, designed to reflect the wealth and sophistication of the guests.
Beyond their primary function, tableware was a true expression of the art of living and culture of the 18th century, in the French style.
