Rating and value of the rooms in the Cardeilhac house
A famous silversmith and jewelry designer of its time, the House of Cardeilhac leaves behind a unique artistic identity. This legacy is mainly composed of goldsmith's pieces, such as household sets, candelabras... Today, prices for these creations are rising under the auctioneers' hammer, but their value is stable. Menagères are particularly prized, especially by French buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €20 to €57,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Cardeilhac creations. Style and technique at Cardeilhac
The Cardeilhac silversmiths, a family dynasty bearing the names of the various silversmiths who succeeded each other after the company was founded, mainly produce services. The taste of the pieces varies from period to period, but is often stylistically close to that of Christofle.
The history of Cardeilhac
Cardeilhac was founded in Paris in 1804 by Antoine-Vital Cardeilhac, on rue du Roule in the 8th arrondissement.
He produced for around ten years - and on the strength of the success of his goldsmith's pieces, registered his first hallmark in 1817, and others in the years that followed.
From 1851 onwards, his son Armand Edouard Cardeilhac took over the management of the company, followed by his grandson Ernest in 1885, who developed the company with the introduction of precious metals, namely gold (and silver). His mother supported him and opened a new boutique on the Place Vendôme, which confirmed their recognition and success in the goldsmith's and silversmith's market.
In 1920, the founder's two great-grandchildren ran the company until Christofle and Cardeilhac reached an agreement to merge.
Cardeilhac's mark on its era
The House of Cardeilhac has left an important artistic legacy, bearing witness to the permanent artistic renewal of the early 20th century, and was considered a rising star in the world of goldsmithing at the beginning of this period. Its work is exhibited in many prestigious art collections around the world, although it is little known to the general public.
Today, these works are still successful at auction. Although some of them are kept in museums in Europe, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work, especially the jewelry.
Recognizing the goldsmith's hallmark
The Cardeilhac goldsmith's hallmark is easy enough to recognize: a crowned Legion of Honor cross above a crescent. However, this hallmark can be counterfeited, which is why expertise is important.
