Style and technique of the artist Robert Combas

French artist born in 1957, Robert Combas is the founder of the Figuration Libre movement. This artistic movement emerged in France in the late 1970s as a rebellion against the conceptual art predominant at the time. A versatile artist, he explores a variety of techniques and media (canvas, brushes, ceramics, drawing, clothes, sheets), but his comic-book-inspired paintings and drawings best characterize his work.

The life of Robert Combas

After graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier in 1979, Robert Combas quickly entered the art market, joining the prestigious Yvon Lambert gallery in 1982. He became a reference on the French and international art markets, exhibiting in Europe and the United States in the gallery of renowned dealer Léo Castelli. In the early 1990s, Robert Combas ended his collaboration with Yvon Lambert to exhibit in other galleries.

He drew close to several American artists close to his work, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and in France to Art Brut, notably Gaston Chaissac.

His works invaded the art market, and his value fluctuated between high and abnormally low prices. It stabilized in the early 2000s and has grown steadily ever since.
