Style and technique of artist Vassiliew Slavik

Vassiliew Slavik is not really attached to any particular movement; he is mainly a set painter, but sometimes borrows artistic characteristics from Surrealism. He has produced gouaches on paper, bronzes and, above all, paintings in situ in various locations.

Slavik, from Estonia to Galeries Lafayette Paris

Vasilew Slavik (1920-2014), whose real name was Wiatscheslav Vasiliev, was born in Tallinn, Estonia. He spent his childhood in Finland and moved to Paris with his parents, where he entered high school. He continued his studies at the Paris School of Decorative Arts. He also studied cinema. He worked successively with Serge Lifar and Jacques Adnet. Shortly afterwards, he was hired by Jean Adnet as an interior decorator for Galeries Lafayette. He continued his career at Publicis as an aesthetic consultant. He then went on to decorate various restaurants, boutiques and public places.

At the beginning of his career, he worked more on decorative painting and painted on Jacques Adnet's furniture; the screens that can be found at auction date from this period. He also worked as a cartonnier for the Gobelins manufactory, producing fashion cartoons. Lagerfeld owned one.

He also decorated shows, for the Paris Opera among others, although these were not his most famous works. With Publicis, he went on to revolutionize Parisian consumerism with his famous drugstores.

Slavik's footprint

Slavik's innovations left a lasting mark on his era. The Parisian department stores and restaurants he worked for, as well as the drugstores, have remained anchored in the commercial life of Parisians. His designs include the brasserie and restaurant at Le Lutetia, Le Dôme and Le Jules Verne, at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Recognizing the artist's signature
