Style and technique of the artist Édouard Cazaux

Édouard Cazaux is part of the Art Deco movement. His ceramics and other works are mostly inspired by religious, mythological or secular themes. He uses color in small touches, his vases being mostly white.

The life of Édouard Cazaux

Édouard Cazaux (1889-1974), a French artist, became a key figure in French ceramics.

He was born in the Landes region, into a family of potters whose work was already recognized and appreciated throughout the region. During his childhood, they lived in several towns in the South-West of France, selling their wares.

At an early age, he began an apprenticeship at the Outseau factory, where he learned all about ceramics. At the age of 18, he found a job in Paris and moved there. At the same time, he met Charles Despiau during a trip. He then attended courses at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the École de Sèvres. He works with Edmond Lachenal, who teaches him gilding on earthenware, which he uses in his creations.

He then carried out a number of public commissions and opened his own studio in Varenne. At the same time, he exhibited his work at several Parisian venues, including the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. On some works, he collaborates with his two brothers, also trained in pottery and ceramics. The other two Cazaux brothers set up their business in and around Biarritz, producing signed works for villas, meaning that a piece can be signed Cazaux without being by Édouard Cazaux. Towards the end of his career, he produced vases in Norton stoneware, which are still highly sought-after today.

The value of his works

Édouard Cazaux's works are widely collected. Although some of his work is held in museums throughout France, the majority is in the hands of private collectors. Cazaux's pieces are quite unique, colorful and elegant. What's more, they are suitable for any interior.

Recognizing the signature of Édouard Cazaux

Édouard Cazaux's ceramics are generally signed "CAZAUX". His two brothers also produced and marketed ceramics and pottery, so if you think you own a piece by Édouard Cazaux, it's essential to have it appraised.
