Artist's rating and value Mela Muter

Mela Muler was an important figure in twentieth-century Parisian art salons. She was part of the "École de Paris" movement, which was not really a movement per se, but a group of artists who collaborated and inspired each other's work. Today, prices for his works are soaring exponentially under auctioneers' hammers. Her paintings are particularly prized, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €1,500 to €325,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Mela Muter's works. In 2017, two pastel-dominated polychrome compositions dating from 1907 sold for €273,067, whereas they were estimated at between €154,000 and €189,000.

Artist Mela Muter's style and technique

Mela Muter was first noticed by Ambroise Vollard, the dealer who launched the careers of Braque and Picasso. She was initially influenced by Symbolism, then gradually turned to Expressionism. However, she never really fit into the characteristics of these movements, and her work is marked by an artistic identity of its own.

The life of Mela Muter

Maria Melania Klingsland, and her artist's name Mela Muter (1915-2001), a Franco-Polish artist, became a major figure in the art world of the 20th century. She trained at two schools: the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Colarossi. Her life was marked by her association with Polish and Parisian intellectual circles, from which both her husbands emerged.

She lived through both wars and traveled extensively in France, which had an influence on her work. She fled Paris during the Second World War because she feared she was in danger from the people she associated with (communist and socialist intellectuals). She lived in Avignon for some time, where she refocused on literature. She was an artist before she was a painter, and so immersed herself in arts other than painting in order to produce her works. She also frequented musicians of her time who were in the same artistic vein, such as the pianist Erik Satie.

Like Pablo Picasso, sight problems slowed down her production towards the end of her life, and she died in her studio at the age of 91.

Mela Muter's imprint its period

Her work is marked by her own inspiration and she stands out artistically, but her work is also part of a long-term intellectual collaboration with artists from all horizons.

She was a frequent visitor to Parisian Salons such as the Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne. She has met many artists and seen many artistic movements during her life, and her work reflects this. For a time, she was a member of the jury at the Salon d'Automne. Mela Muter exhibited in France and in many other countries, including Spain and the United States. Like Kandinsky and the Delaunays, her work is recognized and widely circulated.

She has lived through all the advances and philosophical works on colorimetry, and her work reflects this evolution. Most of her work is oil on canvas, but she also produced a few prints and watercolor drawings.

She has a remarkable sense of space, which she uses to transform her vision into abstraction, and she also frequents Auguste Perret.
